Fashion has become such an intrinsic part of our lives today
that one cannot imagine anyone with no fashion sense.
Jeans are the perfect example of the democratization of
fashion, in the words of fashion icon Giorgio Armani, himself. Ever since 1853
when the first pair of blue denim jeans were created by Levi Strauss, there has
been no fashion outfit that has had such a long reign nor so much
versatility.
As long as one lives in society, as opposed to being a
recluse in the woods, fashion will have a role to play in the lives of people. Fashion
is sometimes a result of society and at others, influences society.
Clothes started off as comfort wear but soon took on fashion
elements. In fact fashion was always present as far as humankind existed. Down
the ages, every culture and every age had its own fashion statement, in the
form of clothes, jewellery and other accessories.
Today, fashion is all about trends and brands. Even as one
expresses one’s individuality, paying due respect to trends and flaunting
brands has become the unspoken rule. Even if one doesn’t follow fashion, there
are occasions which simply demand it. As the occasion, so the outfit.
The late Princess Diana of Britain was known for dressing perfectly
for every occasion- from official royal functions to glamorous parties to a
visit to the beach or the African jungle, she looked different yet stylish each
time. Her daughter-in-law Kate is following in her footsteps with her dressing
styles.
Even those who believe in breaking all rules would be
surprised to learn that not wearing a trend is also a trend in itself! If
you’re wondering how trends get created, they are a reflection of intense
political, cultural or economic beliefs.
The growth of the fashion industry into the megalith it is
today has spurred fashion schools and designer labels. Be it bizarre or
extremely wearable, designers and labels are here to stay.
Fashion is also a definition of culture – be it a particular
country or religion. But with the world becoming a small place, fashion trends
from different parts of the world get included or influence fashion in one’s
part of the world. The more it happens, the merrier the fashion world becomes,
one might say.
Undoubtedly, the more fashionable one is, the more
confidence one is able to exude in the modern world. It tells others what you
are, without you having to speak a word. It hints at your background, your
status and your personality. As the lady behind the brand Prada – Miuccia Prada
– puts it, “Fashion
is instant language!”
Fashion often moves from the ramp to shop windows to the
closets of the fashion-conscious, before moving to the mass markets for mass
consumption. Dur to the tremendous growth in this industry, players in the
fashion world cannot work without data. Therefore, Artificial Intelligence (AI)
is being used to read the mind of the customer, predict market trends and
create fashionable clothes.
If there are still people out there who proclaim they have
nothing to do with fashion, there’s only one piece of advice for them: “When in
doubt, wear red”, to quote American designer Bill Blass.
